Be Helpful to Others | A Piece of Bread

                    Be Helpful to Others

a dog and a monkey travelling together -- a basket of bread on the dog's back -- both feel hungry -- dog eats human faeces on the roadside -- monkey asks dog for a piece of bread -- dog refuses -- wolf appears -- dog requests monkey to help him to climb a tree nearby -- monkey refuses -- wolf kills the dog

Friendship may lie everywhere but a real friendship is actually rare. Once there was a good friendship between a dog and a donkey. They were very close friends since their childhood.

The monkey used to live in a tree that was in the garden of the dog's master. And the garden was at a stone throw distance.

Every morning the dog used to have a plate full of snacks or a square meal in the courtyard. Every time he would leave a good amount of scrape of his breakfast in the morning or meal at lunch. After the dog was gone, the baby monkey would descend to eat the leftovers every day.

For a fact, the dog came to know that. And from then on, he liked to give up more portion of his food for the baby dog out of his generosity. Though it was a kid monkey, it came to understand the bounty of the baby dog. Down the years they grew up.

In the absence of the master, the dog would bark at the monkey to come down and play with him. By nature, the monkey is an intelligent animal. It realised there is no bad intention in the mind of the dog. Every day it would descend down the tree and enjoy a good time when there might be a chance. By the by they became so intimate with each other.

One day they were out to travel. Long ago they planned to go out together. Today their wish was fulfilled. The Lord and his wife went to visit a friend's house for a week. Now the dog has a basket of bread for a week. The dog had tied the basket of bread on his back. They began to walk the path together. There is no specific destination for them. They left very early in the morning. They had a lot of fun walking along the path in the sweet sun of the morning.

As they walked, they were talking about the joys and sorrows of life. The monkey was sometimes quite forward. The dog was having a hard time walking with a basket of bread on his back. The dog was very angry at the monkey. Is this a pattern of friendship? What kind of friend is a friend who does not understand the suffering of?

By this time the sun was blazing hot on their head. Now they are in a desolate wilderness. They could no longer walk in the hot sun. They walked for about five hours. Now both of them felt hungry. But there was nothing for a monkey to eat except loaves of bread loaded on the dog's back.

The monkey asked the dog, "Aren't you hungry friend?"

The dog replied, "I am terribly hungry."

The monkey suggested, Let's sit under the tree and eat together."

Then the dog asked the monkey," But, what will you eat?"

"Give me a loaf of bread from your basket", said the monkey.

"I am carrying such a big basket with so much sun on my head. Do you think I have nothing to suffer? What kind of friend are you?" said the dog with immense hatred.

Now the monkey felt very guilty and felt sorry for him.

"Please forgive me. I will never make such a mistake again. I'm begging." said the repentant monkey.

Yet, the dog turned a deaf ear to. He didn't even eat bread himself and started to eat faeces on the roadside.

After a while, a large group of wolves was approaching them at a great speed. On a chance, The dog realised he could not run fast with the basket of bread to escape off the pack of the wolves. So he requested the monkey to help him to climb up the tree nearby. Immediately the monkey turned down his request. Soon the wolf pounced on the dog and killed him on the spot.

Moral: The real friend is revealed in danger.
